Brown Bag Salmon
I went to a Salmon tasting event two weeks ago and one of the demonstrated recipes was a Brown Bag Salmon. I knew immediately that I would need to try to make it on my own with a few changes from their original recipe.
Ingredients & Directions:
8 oz Salmon Fillet
1/2 Cup Onions, sliced
6-8 Asparagus Spears, ends snapped off
5 Lemon slices
1/2 T Roasted Sunflower seeds (You can...
'For the Health of It Event' with Oldways
I was invited to attend an event sponsored by Oldways and Kwik’pak Fisheries called For the Health of It. The event introduced us to the benefits of salmon, specifically Wild Yukon Salmon, through a seminar, a cooking demonstration, and tastings.
Dr. Dariush Mazaffarian, from the Harvard School of Public Health, gave a very informative lecture about the benefits of seafood &...

My Favorite Late Night Snack
I usually stay up late and eat dinner early so inevitably I feel like a snack later in the night. Of course, I like to make sure what I am eating is not horrible for me (I mean on the occasion cheese fries or nachos can’t be avoided…they call to me). The thing I almost always make is a frozen blueberry dessert treat. It is simple to make with just three ingredients and barely any...

Chocolate Stout and Whiskey Cupcakes
This recipe has been floating around the internet for a while, and every Saint Patrick’s Day I say I’m going to try it out, and I never do. But this year was my year - I finally made the delicious cuppin’ cakes and they were wildly popular.
Ingredients & Method (adapted from the Smitten Kitchen):
For the cupcakes:
1 cup stout (such as Guinness)
1 cup (2 sticks)...

Lunch at Addy's Sandwich Bar
Justin and I have committed to stop being such punks and start to explore the many many food carts Portland has to offer. When we had dinner at Beast, one of our table mates told us about the Duck Confit sandwich at Addy’s, and since then it’s been on our minds. Monday was a gorgeous sunny day in Portland, and after we each had our own mornings, we met up at Addy’s for lunch.

Blueberry Meringue Pie (Happy Pi Day!)
I couldn’t let Pi Day go by without making an actual pie. I moved the other day and accidentally put a bag of frozen blueberries in the refrigerator, which helped determine the type of pie I was going to make. I’m not sure what made me think of doing a blueberry meringue, sometimes these things just come to me.
Ingredients & Directions:
For the filling
3/4 cup sugar
1/4...

A Very British Dinner: Fish, Chips & Mushy Peas
Oh mah gah. My best friend from college, Ms. Pickle Oblath, is British. She’s introduced me to things I never thought I’d try, and when my sister and I went to visit her back in the Summer of 2006, she introduced me to one of my most favorite foods in the whole world - mushy peas. I can’t tell you how disappointed I get with “authentic” British pubs and chippys...

Homemade Bagels
These are probably the most complicated thing I’ve made. Yeast and two different risings and boiling dough and ahhh!! Though it took a lot of careful reading and re-reading and nervous peeking into the oven, these bagels turned out awesome. This recipe makes about 10 (random number, right?) but one of my bagels had an accident when it was time to boil, so I had 12 (9 bagels, three...

Dark Chocolate Raspberry Muffins
Sometimes my boyfriend asks me why I’m not more like Steven. I guess I haven’t been making enough sweet things for him lately since he emailed me a link to Steven’s homemade peanut butter cup recipe with the subject MAKE MAKE MAKE MAKE!!
I searched a few of my favorite recipe sites, and saw that Sues over at We Are Not Martha made these muffins for Valentine’s Day and...

Irish Soda Bread
As someone who grew up in Boston in a very Irish neighborhood, St. Patrick’s Day has always been a celebrated holiday. The best part about it is that in Boston it’s also an actual holiday, Evacuation Day, and not having school when I was growing up was the best. Now that I’m older I have to work, but that doesn’t stop me from eating good food and drinking good beer on...
